How to Oil a Ceiling Fan
Unfortunately it’s not uncommon for ceiling fans to wear over time, and when this happens they will need a little bit of tender loving care to get them running again. You should be able to identify when your ceiling fan needs some routine maintenance by an increase in the amount of noise it produces. When the noise increases, the problem is likely due to the fact that the oil reservoir is too low for optimal operation, and therefore you are going to need to oil it.
Check Your Fan
The first thing you need to is check whether your fan actually does use an oiled motor (not all of them do). If you try and oil a fa that doesn’t use an oiled motor you’re gonna end up with a whole lot more problems. In order to check this properly, it would be good to find the manual for your model and do a bit of research before you start.
Turn Off the Power
Being electrocuted is the outcome that you desire so make sure you that all power to the ceiling fan is completely turned off. After this, you will need to use a stepladder to check the oil levels whilst the fan is still installed in the ceiling.
Determine Oil Levels
A really simple way to determine whether or not you need to oil your fan is by using a pipe cleaner. Simply insert the pipe cleaner into the oil level hole. When you pull the pipe cleaner out if there is oil on it then the problem lies elsewhere, if the pipe cleaner is dry then you can continue with the process of oiling your fan.
You need to disconnect the fan from the ceiling. Begin with the fan blades and then remove the fan motor.
Oil the Motor
Put your motor down on a flat surface and find the bearings at the top and bottom of the motor. Slowly drip three to four drops of oil into the top bearing and then spin the motor around to spread the oil throughout the motor. If you are using a spray, then use short sharp blasts directly into the bearings. Repeat this process again but this time dropping the oil into the bottom bearings.
Finally you can reconnect your fan. Begin with the electrical wiring and finish with the screws.
